ThaiCards

The 100 most common Thai words to learn first

These are the first 100 words in the ThaiCards course, in teaching order, with the tone of every syllable. Learn these and you can greet, ask, order and count.

The first 100 words

This is the order ThaiCards teaches new words: greetings and politeness first, then the pronouns, question words and verbs you need to build a sentence, then numbers, money and time. 60 of these 100 are in the free Beginner Starter deck, marked free deck.

The romanization is the simple spelling the app shows on its cards. The colored labels give the tone of each syllable, worked out by the app's tone engine.

How to use this list

  1. Learn the words in order. Each group makes the next one easier to use.
  2. Say every word aloud with its tone. A word said in the wrong tone is a different word; see Thai tones.
  3. Add ครับ or ค่ะ to be polite. The hello guide explains them.
  4. Review with spaced repetition instead of rereading the list. See how ThaiCards schedules reviews.

Practice this in ThaiCards

ThaiCards teaches these words in this order and brings each one back just before you would forget it. Most of the first 100 are in the free starter deck.

Free to start: the Beginner Starter deck and the first 10 letters of the alphabet deck. Premium is $1.99 a month and opens every deck. No account needed to begin.
