Colors in Thai

Ten color words cover almost everything you will point at. Here they are with their tones, how they go after a noun, and the two Thai blues.

The color words

สี see means "color". Each color is said with it in front: สีแดง see daeng is "red", สีขาว see khaao is "white". The table gives the bare color words as the ThaiCards course teaches them, with the tone of each syllable from the app's tone engine.

How to use a color

Colors follow the noun, like every Thai adjective: รถสีแดง rot see daeng is "red car" (car, color, red) and เสื้อสีขาว suea see khaao is "white shirt". To ask what color something is, say สีอะไร see a rai, "what color?". Add มาก mak for "very": แดงมาก daeng mak, very red.

Thai has two blues

น้ำเงิน nam ngoen, "blue", is the dark blue of the Thai flag and of ink. ฟ้า faa is the sky, and also the light blue you see in a clear sky. Pick by shade, not by the English word. Brown works the same way: น้ำตาล nam tan is "sugar", so สีน้ำตาล see nam tan, sugar color, is brown.

The color of each day

Thailand gives every day of the week a color, and people often know the color of their birth day. The Thai days of the week guide has the day names with tones.
